July 2011

I am back in my spirit home up north with my family. It is so great to see the kids excited and running around in the fresh air. We are here for a few weeks. I am working during this time, but I hope that the freshness of the air will leave me rejuvenated and filled with  a quiet peace. During this time, I will have limited access to internet, so please do not be alarmed if you do not hear from me either on the blog or on Facebook. I will answer my mail when I get back. This is a forced retreat where I intend to dance to the rhythm of the wind and the flow of the river, to reconnect with the Great Source. I wish you all well during this time.

Before I go, I leave you with a little exercise that has left me filled with joy and energy. A good friend of mine mentioned an exercise that she was doing and I decided to follow her lead. The exercise consists of writing down  100 things that you want to do in your life. I am doing this exercise not with the mindset that life is short and I am going to die (which of course is true on both counts). I am doing the exercise to look at my life and draw out what makes me vibrate in my innermost place. As I was thinking about my 100 things, I was amazed at the power of some of the most mundane little things. I was surprised at how happy the thought of brewing specialty tea was making me and how I had a really passion for food and dance and getting people together. Some things that a lot of people would automatically consider as a ‘must’ didn’t strike me as exciting at all. It is a great exercise in ‘Know thyself’ and a great way to have fun and dream a little.

Thanks Gen, for this beautiful exercise.

So I wish you all a great month and a beautiful journey with your wish list. God and Goddess bless.

It’s been a crazy weekend. Whereas last weekend was a dream come true, this weekend my son lost all composure. The culmination of the weekend was having to drag my screaming son across the park to get him to take a shower before going into the pool because the lifeguard said so. Not hot.

Of course, this sends me into a mind loop of what I did to mess things up and how I should make things better and a whole lot of anger at a system that doesn’t tolerate a child to stare out the window for 5 consecutive minutes. How do those other parents muster the authority to get their children to do what they want (well, at least in public….)? Well, I have said all this before. Recurrent theme in my life.

Today was better, even though my mind did race all day with a bunch of unwanted thoughts about what will happen in the future and why is this happening. As I put the children to bed, my son starts screaming. He tells me there is a monster. I proceeded to expel the said monster, but it wasn’t clear whether he wanted the monster stay or go. I asked him, ‘Can we call angels instead?’ His face softened and he said, ‘Yes, angels.’ So I called Raphael to bring us health and strength, Gabriel to bring us wisdom and inspiration, Michael to bring us courage and a thirst for justice and Uriel to bring us love and compassion. I then said the prayer to our guardian angels. And my son fell asleep.

From the next bed, my daughter calls me to hug her to sleep. As I lie down next to her, she looks at me and says ‘Prière’. Prayer. I start saying the familiar words of Our Father (which she almost knows by heart already) and a sudden wave of emotion took over me. I looked at her steady breathing. She is only two years old and already she has this sacred place that she can go to for comfort, the sacred place of a few rhythmic words that I weave around her. She then looked at me with her peachy smile and said, ‘Marie’. I continued my weaving with a string of Hail Mary’s, the rhythm of which lulled her to sleep. As I was saying these words of power, the gifts from our tradition, I felt four pillars take hold of each corner of my house. I realized then, with deep emotion, that it did not matter how I raised them. It didn’t matter what I said and how I got them to behave or if Super Nanny would be proud of me. More important than this, is that they grow up surrounded by the Great Source, in its all its faces and symbols and songs. I don’t even need to tell them about it. It is their gift of vision that will let them see the sacred in their own special way. Four pillars of strength for a sacred place. And me, the Mother, Priestess and Keeper of this place, weaving magic and peace and fortitude for all to behold. This I can handle.

Not to say that I may not lose my mind tomorrow. But for tonight, I give thanks to my Lord and Lady for the vision of my most cherished dream: a fortress, a sanctuary, a home.

The last couple of exercises should have convinced you that there indeed is an energy field that surrounds everything. If you are still finding it difficult to perceive this energy layer, keep practicing. Give yourself a chance and just believe it exists. Once your eye adjust to this reality, you’ll wonder how you ever missed it!

So now you see the energy swirl in front of you and possibly even around other people. We are surrounded by this energy. It surrounds us in a kind of egg shaped cocoon. The ‘quality’ of this layer varies from person to person. If you are lucky to share this journey with someone close, you might want to test each others’ energies to test your perceptions.

We are now going to take this a step further. Remember to center and ground firmly, because you are about to play around with your own energy field.

Exercise 1:

Close your eyes and try to envision with your inner eye how far your energy bubble reaches around you. Is it bigger in the front? Is it thinner in certain areas and thicker in others? How much space does it take up?

Now reach out your hand and try to feel where your energy field ends. You might find that there is a little give as you cross the edge of your energy field similar to the surface tension of a droplet of water. If you are working with someone else, you will see that very often a person’s own vision of their field matches the perception of others who test it with their hands or with their inner vision. It is quite striking and it is a foundation on which to build your confidence in your own magical abilities.

Some people have their energy field very close to their body. Others fill a room with it. You know the expression ‘bigger than life’? Well, that’s exactly what we are talking about! Which brings me to the next exercise.

Exercise 2:

It is possible to manipulate our energy fields according to our need of the moment. We can become bigger or we can become smaller. The key is to be well connected to the Earth, our primary energy source. So, we must begin by being well grounded. Notice where your energy field is in front of you. Drawing in energy from the Earth, fill your bubble so as to push the confines of your energy field. I find it easiest to draw in energy on an inhale and to expand on the exhale. See how big you are able to expand your energy field. Expansion can be useful in various context. You can use it to gain attention in a subtler way than yelling for it. It can also be used to command respect from others, take a position of leadership or take a warrior stance when approaching conflict. It helps (a little) to get the kids to listen up. Well, it did at the beginning anyway….

Now, try the opposite. Suck in your energy to make your energy field stick as close as you can  to your skin. Take note of how you feel. This may feel quite natural for you or it may feel like you are walking around naked. It is really a matter of personality. This is the invisibility cloak. You want to restrict your energy field when you want to go unnoticed, to sneak around, to evade conflict or if you don’t want to be found.

Now, just for fun….

Try these techniques while walking in a crowd, like on a busy street or in the subway. See how people around you react. Do they tend to bump into you more? Or do they get out of your way?

If you are working with someone else, first practice with your own field and then try these exercises together. Once you master the art of expansion and constriction, try it in different settings, while walking around or while talking to other people. It is by practicing in many different settings that you will be able to master this technique and be able to do it at the speed of light. Make sure to write all your observations in your journal or book of shadows.
